Outside Scholarship Resources for Military-connected Students 

  • The AMVET National Scholarship Program is designed for those veterans who have exhausted the resources of the GI Bill®. Additionally, the scholarship aids National Guard/Reserve as well as spouses and dependents. Applicants must have been honorably discharged and attend an accredited college, college, university or technical school. The award is $1000 per academic year, renewable for up to three years. Reopens: Renews January 15th - April 30th annually. 

  • The Dr.Aurelio M.Caccomo Memorial Scholarship is in memory of and honor of Dr. Aurelio M. Caccomo. Dr. Auerlio enlisted in the Army Reserves where he would acquire the rank of Colonel and serve in Special Forces. Applicants must be Veterans or members of the National Guard/Reserves and must have a high school diploma or GED. Additionally, applicants agree to AMVETS to publicize your scholarship award if you are selected. The award amount is $12,000 of two scholarships that are awarded annually. Deadline: Renews January 15th - April 30th annually. 

  • Google SVA Scholarship As part of Google’s commitment to military veterans, the company partners with SVA each year to fund scholarships. The scholarship aids student veterans who are pursuing university degrees in the field of computer science in the U.S. Selected students will receive $10,000 for the upcoming school year. Deadline: No specified deadline. Possibly reopens every academic year.

  • The VFW's "Sport Clips Help A Hero Scholarship" provides service members and veterans with the financial assistance they need to complete their educational goals without incurring excessive student loan debt. It’s just another way for us to say “thank you” to those who fought for our freedoms. Deadline: Applications for the fall semester will be accepted Jan. 1 through April 30. Applications for the spring semester will be accepted Aug. 1 through Nov. 15 

  • AVECO is proud to announce the AVECO Scholarship Program beginning in the 2023-2024 academic year. The program was created to provide assistance covering educational expenses for veterans, services members their spouses. All awards are contingent on annual AVECO board approval of program funding allocations. Deadline: Opens February 27th– April 28th) 

  • The Pat Tillman Foundation offers the Leadership Through Action – Tilman Military Scholars program which provides financial assistance to veterans and active-duty military who wish to start, continue, or finish their college education. Award amounts vary, and eligibility is determined by merit as well as financial need. Applicants are required to maintain a 3.0 GPA and must submit two essays for consideration. Deadline: Opens February 2024) 

  • The Army Women’s Foundation (AWF) recognizes the importance of education and the role it plays in personal, professional, and economic fulfillment. The Army Women’s Foundation Legacy Scholarship Program provides grants to women soldiers, past and present, and their lineal descendants to help them attain their educational goals. The AWF Legacy Scholarship Program offers financial support in four areas: Certificate Programs, Community College coursework, Undergraduate Degrees, and Graduate Degrees. Scholarships are awarded only for coursework from accredited institutions. Scholarships are based on merit, academic potential, personal essay, community service, letters of recommendation, and financial need. Deadline: (January 21, 2023) 

  • The Raytheon Missiles & Defense SPY-6 Scholarship, named for the U.S. Navy’s SPY-6 Family of Radars, provides returning sailors an opportunity to achieve educational goals and position themselves for success in civilian professions. Two $10,000 scholarships will be awarded to sailors who pursue an undergraduate or graduate degree at an accredited university and demonstrate leadership in their local community. Deadline: Anticipating opening between April 8th - April 30th, 2024.

  • Through these Air and Space Forces Association scholarships, caring organizations and individuals help students pursue their dreams of higher education with generous grants. These programs exemplify the lifelong bond of Airmen and the commitment of our supporting community. AFA is proud to present this year’s scholarship recipients and highlight all of their contributions toward furthering the AFA, and Air and Space Force missions. Deadline: Opens December 1st- April 30th 

  • The Army Aviation Association of America (AAAA) Scholarship Foundation was established to render financial assistance for the college-level education of members of the Army Aviation Association of America, Inc. Can only hold one AAAA scholarship at a time. Merit-based scholarships vary from $1,000 to $12,000, judged off of academics, leadership, volunteer service, work experience, and essay responses. Deadline: Opens September 1st  

  • Imagine America’s Military Award Program (MAP) was established to provide $1,000 scholarships for active-duty military personnel,  reservists, honorably discharged military veterans, and retired veterans of the U.S. armed forces who have decided to pursue career college training. Deadline: ANNUAL OPEN YEAR ROUND 

The Tailhook Education Foundation awards over 100 scholarships annually averaging more than $4,000 per grant with their top grant awarded at $15,000. A number of the TEF grants are awarded to students pursuing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) curriculum. All TEF grants assist Naval Aviation legacy undergraduate students obtain a higher education. TEF is open from December 15th, 22024,to March 1st, 2025, and any Dependent of a current or former Naval Aviator, Naval Flight Officer, or Air-crewman can apply. 

The American Legion Legacy Scholarship is a needs-based scholarship designed to fulfill a financial gap remaining after all federal and state educational grants/scholarships available to an eligible applicant have been utilized. The applications are usually open from January to April of the new year (2025) and any child of U.S. military members who died while on active duty on or after Sept. 11, 2001, are eligible along with children of post-9/11 veterans having been assigned a combined disability rating of 50 percent or greater by the Department of Veterans Affairs. There is a $5,000 scholarship maximum for Children of the Disabled and a maximum award of $20,000 for Children of the Fallen.  

Inside the Navy SEAL community, school and development opportunities can be a challenge. This is true for both warriors and families. Programs under The Navy SEAL Education Pillar like the Navy SEAL Foundation Scholarship were built to empower active-duty NSW personnel, their spouses and children, as well as our SEAL and SWCC veterans and their children, by awarding scholarships for higher education. Scholarships are from $2,500 to $5,000 paid directly to the school and any Spouse or College-Age Dependent Child of an Active-duty SEAL or SWCC, as well as Veteran SEAL or SWCC can apply. There are multiple scholarship cycles from January to February and May through June.  

Through the Honored SEAL Legacy Scholarship Program, the names and heroic actions of Navy SEALs who made the ultimate sacrifice will never be forgotten. Each year, the Foundation awards higher education scholarships for tuition and associated costs to children of SEALs. Children of Active Duty, Retired, Separated or Reservist navy SEALs can apply usually from early January to Mid-February, with scholarships around $5,000. 

The Folds of Honor scholarship is humbled by the eagerness of spouses and children to honor their service member by working hard toward educational goals. They pledge to stand in the gap financially as you take the next step in your education. Scholarships are up to $5,000 and students can apply from February 1st to March 31st of 2025. Eligible students include any Dependent or Spouse of a Service Member. 

The National Military Family Association has cheered on military spouses by awarding scholarships to help pay for everything from GED’s to PhD’s, professional licenses and certifications, including re-licensure, business and entrepreneurial expenses, supervised clinical hours, continuing education courses, and more. Scholarships range from $500 too $2,500, Applications are rolling and awarded on a quarterly basis. Eligible students are Spouses of a member that has served posted 9/11/2001 and is Active-duty, Retiree, a 100% Disabled veteran, guardsman, Reservist, or a Fallen Service member. 

The Purple Heart Scholarship Program is a competitive program that awards scholarships to Purple Heart recipients and their spouses, children, and grandchildren each year. At least one applicant with military service will be awarded the Navy SEAL LT Michael Murphy Memorial Award. The amount awarded varies due to funding levels and scholarships open March 1st of 2025 and close on June 1st. The spouse or the direct lineal descendant of a Purple Heart recipient who is a Member of MOPH. If the Purple Heart recipient is listed as killed-in-action or died of wounds, supporting documentation and evidence must be included with the application.   

The Mrs. Patty Shinseki Spouse Scholarship Program is a need-based scholarship program established to assist Army spouses in obtaining an undergraduate degree or similar professional certification. The program was named after Mrs. Shinseki in December 2019. Scholarship awards vary and there are multiple scholarship cycles. Applicants must be a dependent spouse and registered as the spouse of the Soldier in DEERS (Defense Eligibility Enrollment Reporting System). 

The Maj. Gen. James Ursano Scholarship Program for Dependent Children is based on applicants’ financial needs and was established to assist children of Soldiers in obtaining their first undergraduate degrees. Applicants may receive assistance for up to four academic years of full-time study but must meet eligibility criteria and reapply each year. Scholarship awards vary and applications open from February 1st to March 15th of 2025. Applicants must be a dependent of a So ldier on federal active duty, a retired soldier, or a deceased active or retired soldier. Children of National Guard/Reserve Soldiers are eligible if the Soldier is on Title 10 Orders for the entire academic year. Must be registered as a dependent of the Soldier in DEERS. 

The AMVETS scholarships are designed to fulfill a financial gap after all Federal/State grants and/or scholarships available to an eligible applicant have been exhausted. Scholarships award up to $4,000 and applications open Mid-January to April 30th, 2025. AMVETS is proud to offer scholarships/grants to our nation’s Veterans, Active Duty, Guard and Reserves; their Spouses as well as their Children and Grandchildren.    

AVECO is proud to announce the AVECO Scholarship Program that began in the 2024-2025 academic year. The program was created to provide assistance covering educational expenses for veterans and service members and their spouses. Scholarships are $500 to $1,000 and Applicants must be the spouse of a uniformed service member.  

The AAAA Scholarship Foundation, Inc., is a non-profit, tax-exempt corporation established to render financial assistance for the college-level education of members of the Army Aviation Association of America, Inc. (AAAA). Scholarships average around $1,000 to $12,000 and the pre-qualifying form is open from September 1st to December 15th. Applicants must be the spouse, son or daughter, the grand child or the unmarried sibling of a current AAAA member or deceased member. 

The NMCRS Education Assistance Program is designed to help eligible Navy and Marine Corps families pursue their academic goals by providing scholarships and interest-free loans. Awards are provided based on the applicant's financial need, and in accordance with policies established by the Society's Board of Directors. Scholarships range from $500 to $3,000 and applications open from March 1st to May 15th. Applicants can be Children of active duty, retired or qualifying deceased Sailors and Marines, must be under age 23 by September 30 of current academic year, surviving children of Sailors and Marines who passed on active duty or after retirement   

The Wings Over America Scholarship Foundation annually sponsors a minimum of 50 scholarships to further the postsecondary education of Navy dependents from the aviation community. Most scholarships are $5,000 and some are renewable. Pre-qualifications open from October 1st to February 1st and applicants must be dependent children and spouses of active duty, retired, honorably discharged, or deceased Enlisted or Officer U. S. Navy personnel who serve or have served in U. S. Navy Aviation.   

Today’s generation of Marines have made unprecedented sacrifices. And while there are many ways to honor our Nation’s heroes, there is no organization closer to the intersection of real need and lasting impact than the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation. Scholarships are $2,500 to $10,000 per year and all applicants must be the child of a Marine or a Navy Corpsman, Chaplain or Religious Programs specialist attached to a Marine unit, have a cumulative GPA of 2.00, and have an adjusted gross income at or below the financial eligibility threshold determined by the Foundation on an annual basis. For the 2025-2026 application, the threshold is $123,000 for tax year 2023. Applications open January 1st, 2025, and close on March 1st.  

The Fallen Patriots mission is to provide college scholarships and educational counseling to the children of military personnel who have passed away in the line of duty. Theor goal is to bridge the gap in funding between available sources of grants and scholarships (i.e., VA Chapter 33 or 35, federal, state, local and private grants) and the total cost of college. Students can receive up to $6,250 and applicants are dependent children from all branches. Applications open from January 1st to March 1st of 2025. 

The Heroes’ Legacy Scholarship program honors not only those who have fallen in battle, but all who have died or have become disabled through their active military service since September 11, 2001. Students can apply if they are the dependent unmarried children under age 23 of active-duty personnel, Reserve/Guard, retired service members and disabled service members OR survivors of service members who died while on active duty. Scholarships are usually $2,000 

The John S. McCain International Scholarship for Military Families (Gilman-McCain) provides awards of $5,000 for undergraduate dependents (child or spouse) of active or activated United States military personnel to study or intern abroad on credit-bearing programs. Developed under the framework of the State Department’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program, the John S. McCain International Scholarship for Military Families (Gilman-McCain Scholarship) is open to eligible students enrolled at accredited U.S. colleges and universities who receive any type of Title IV federal financial aid.

  • AFCEA War Veterans Scholarships (Undergraduate Only) Merit-based scholarships of varying amounts will be awarded to persons on active duty in the uniformed military services and to honorably discharged U.S. military veterans (including Reservists and National Guard personnel) who are currently enrolled and attending class's part time or full time in an eligible degree program at an accredited four-year college or university in the United States. Deadline: Application reopens October 1st, 2023!
