What was it like to work with Wim?
Working alongside Wim during my undergraduate journey at AU was an unparalleled experience that stands out prominently whenever I reflect on those years. Wim single-handedly transformed my college career and helped me learn invaluable practices that I still implement in my daily life. Wim is not just a mentor; he’s a force of nature who reshaped my understanding and perspective on determination, hustle, grit, and perseverance. His teachings and influence propelled me to pursue several opportunities that were instrumental in kickstarting my journey in the entertainment industry. Beyond just guidance, Wim provided unwavering support and an open space to explore any challenge that I faced during my four years at AU and thankfully, that has continued beyond graduation. Wim is a one-of-a-kind thought leader whose mentorship goes beyond just professional success; he is deeply invested in every person he works with and genuinely cares about the well-being and personal growth of the individual. He has a unique and incredible ability to forge profound connections with individuals from all walks of life and this capacity speaks directly to his character as a human being. His commitment to fostering lasting relationships, creating genuine impact, and providing invaluable guidance is what allows Wim to be such an influential figure for so many.
What are the benefits?
While I could go on and on about the benefits of working with Wim, the best way I can think to describe it is one word: endless. Working with Wim has the ability to transform an individual in every aspect of their life from an educational, professional, personal, and emotional standpoint. Working with Wim forces you to elevate your standards; to do better, to be better, and most importantly, to take the necessary actions to cultivate the future you desire. Collaboration with Wim is a dynamic process, focused on reframing your mindset, while simultaneously implementing tactics to help you attain those goals. Working with Wim involves a comprehensive approach that doesn't just challenge you to dream bigger, but also equips you with the tools to turn those dreams into reality!
If a formal program like this had existed when you were at AU, would you have pursued it and why?
Without a doubt, had there been an established program like this at AU during my time as a student, I would have eagerly jumped at the opportunity. I remember when I first met Wim in a then-new class called “Business Professionalism.” The curriculum covered all of the basics of being a business professional from honing LinkedIn skills to crafting a resume. During one of the classes, Wim was invited to discuss the importance of networking, a session that single handedly shaped the rest of my college career. I recall being absolutely captivated in that 8am class as Wim spoke about the significance of forging meaningful relationships. Prior to this, the concept of “networking” was foreign to me – I had no idea about the importance of reaching out to others and learning from those beyond the confines of my AU bubble. From that class onwards, I had the privilege of working closely with Wim, leveraging his extensive knowledge and guidance to navigate my career and professional growth. As I reflect on my experience with Wim, he worked endlessly to connect me with students and alumni who shared my aspirations. Nevertheless, the opportunity to have participated in a formal program, to interact with, learn from, and grow with fellow students would have only further enriched my AU experience. A structured program would have provided a larger community of like-minded peers who were equally committed to personal and professional growth while also allowing for shared resources and experiences to further amplify all of Wim’s work.
Anything else that you might like to share?
Wim is simply one of the most inspiring speakers. When we used to meet in person, I often wished I could record our conversations, to replay them like a daily mantra for motivation and direction. Two of his sayings have been engrained in my memory forever. The first was during our first meeting and he said, “things will come to those who wait, but only the things left behind by those who hustle.” Since that meeting in October of 2017, it has been the background on my iPhone and serves as a constant reminder to work hard on my passions every day. The second saying perfectly encapsulates the essence of Wim’s teachings; it is to “lift as you climb.” This phrase captures the true spirit of Wim’s mentorship and highlights his focus on always supporting others as you advance. I will forever be indebted to Wim for lifting me up and introducing me to individuals who have since become not only mentors, but personal friends. Wim’s teachings and framework are a powerful force that provide support through the ongoing journey of professional development and self-improvement. It’s about striving to be better, work harder, stay grounded, and most importantly remain humble.

What was it like to work with Wim?
Working with Wim was akin to having a paid personal coach deeply attuned to the needs of a student. As a highly electric, intentional, and thoughtful individual, Wim has the power to not only deeply inspire those that he works with, but also imbues in them a profound feeling of personal agency – helping the student feel deep down that they have the power to achieve their personal goals.
During my 2015 semester at AU (I graduated in the class of 2017), I was looking to get a Sophomore summer internship at a bulge bracket bank. Shortly after getting to know Wim and informing him of my goal, Wim set about methodically walking me through what I’d need to do to be successful. On one occasion in particular, he recommended a book – Mindset by Dr. Carol Dweck – that set off a chain reaction for my personal achievement. Further, this book, coupled with Wim’s bespoke, personal coaching oriented towards helping me achieve my desired outcome – directly resulted in me landing an internship in the Citigroup Corporate and Investment Banking Program for the Summer of 2015. Through his continued help and support, I went on to do be a Summer Analyst at the firm in 2016 and landed a full-time position at Citi’s headquarters in New York in 2017.
What are the benefits?
The benefits are what you make them. Wim is a high-energy, high-performing individual. With anyone he works with personally, when helping that individual achieve outcomes they desire, he naturally pushes them out of their comfort zone. This is in a way that, frankly, can make some feel uncomfortable. However, Wim has a profound interpersonal quality that allows him to push students without making them feel alienated, as he first seeks to build a personal, foundational relationship with a student. What often results is that any feelings of discomfort are transmuted into personal empowerment for the student. The student can grow in a space of grace and understanding, while ultimately aiming to achieve their personal goals.
If a formal program like this had existed when you were at AU, would you have pursued it and why?
I would have. I believe that a main driver of success in my career, and in achieving my past short-term goals of getting a post at Citigroup, was my relationship with Wim. It is a relationship that continues to enrich me to this day. What excites me the most about this program is that it will create an infrastructure for success. I believe that if there was a broader community that I had access to – one that shared the same passion and commitment as my own – it would’ve helped me to be further accountable. When I was at AU (class of 2017) I had a relationship with just Wim – which turned out to be enough in and of itself. A community of like-minded individuals will bolster the momentum inherently created by Wim, and foster an environment where students help lift each other as they climb, raising the likelihood of each student’s induvial success.

What was it like to work with Wim?
Despite only being at AU for a semester in my senior year, Wim has made a lifelong impact on my career trajectory and personal success. This is because Wim is the kind of mentor / advisor who fully sees and understands you. Not only does he recognize your unique potential, but he helps you believe that you can fulfill it. He doesn't do this by giving you the map. Instead, he listens, asks questions, and offers ways of thinking that guide you to build your own map. In this way he instills confidence in you and gives you the tools to tackle your academic and professional goals. That is why 9 years later, when I’m at a crossroads in my career, I think back to the lessons I learned while working with Wim.
What are the benefits?
While there are concrete academic and professional benefits of working with Wim (e.g., landing your dream role or building out your network), the real benefit is that you develop the confidence and tools to tackle challenges throughout your career. This is because Wim’s approach is not to give you the answers or tell you what to do. Rather, Wim will challenge you to use frameworks, mindset shifts, and tools to take on your goals. You’ll learn that your goals are achievable, but only with hard work, strategy and a clear mindset. That, to me, is the ultimate benefit.
If a formal program like this had existed when you were at AU, would you have pursued it and why?
Yes, I would have (eagerly) pursued a formal program at AU if it was available. When I was in college, I (like the students in this program) had a certain hunger and drive to achieve something in my life. I did not always see that same drive in my friends and peers. If I had a community of like-minded peers who felt the same way, I believe it would have reinforced my goals and helped me pursue my path with confidence. Coupled with the training, resources and network that this program offers, this program would have the potential to change the trajectory of my career.
Anything else that you might like to share?
I’d just like to underscore, in my view, how important it is during the college years to feel like someone believes in you and your potential. You already do this with everyone you work with. A program like this is an excellent way to formalize your teachings, and I think this program would make AU a leader in this space.

If a formal program like this had existed when you were at AU, would you have pursued it and why?
Without question, a formal program in this manner would have been a gamechanger! While American University is a fantastic institution and Wim Taylor is a reason for the many successes that have matriculated from American, a standardize program of this magnitude would simply provide the ability to scale an experience that would change the lives of many more students. The sort of community that would be created while on campus would be infectious and lead to lifelong bonds that would remain meaningful many years after the college experience. In addition to the stellar network students would create by attending American, having an embedded community within the larger AU environment would lead to a curated experience that would provide the support students need when the inevitable challenges of life arise.

Throughout his tenure at American University, Wim has supported countless students through their career development and decision making. He empowers students to reframe challenges in front of them as opportunities by breaking down those challenges into actionable steps and achievable outcomes. He invests in the person and community and makes himself available for coaching sessions, ranging from a quick check in, to an hour long session mapping out how to get from Point A to Point B (or Point Z, if you’re really determined). He maintains a high level of curiosity and regularly follows the latest from thought leaders in the professional space. This ensures that he always has the perfect quotation or strategy at the ready.
When I first started working with Wim, I set a 10 year goal to work in tech. As a young woman in her third year, it felt daunting and impossible to join a tech company immediately out of college. Wim helped me set my reach and stretch goals and motivated me to always put in the work and stay positive. When something good seemed to surprisingly occur, rather than letting me call it “luck,” he reminded me that I put in the work to even be considered before luck could have played a part. As I turned my stretch goal into reality, Wim was there as a key advisor cheering me on along the way.
