What's Going On At Ward Circle?

As you may have noticed, there have been some changes made to Ward Circle. The District of Columbia Department of Transportation (DDOT) began construction in June 2018 and it is expected to be completed this summer. Changes include new signage and markings, and, in an effort to improve transportation safety, signalization of the Massachusetts Avenue approaches to the circle.

Notably, this means that pedestrians must wait for the “walk” signal to cross Massachusetts Ave. at Ward Circle. Both drivers and pedestrians should exhibit additional caution as they become acclimated to these changes. Visit ddot.dc.gov/page/ward-circle for additional information.

As a reminder, a HAWK (High-Intensity Activated crossWalK) signal midblock on Nebraska Ave. NW was installed to improve pedestrian safety. Vehicular traffic on Nebraska Ave. stops for pedestrians only when the “walk” button is pressed.

Scootering and Ridesharing to AU

Scooters & Bicycle Shares

The weather is warming up and dockless scooters and bicycles have started popping up around the District and near campus. Scooters and bicycles are sustainable, low-cost alternatives to driving to get to Tenleytown, Georgetown, Glover Park, and other nearby neighborhoods.

AU’s Parking & Commuter Services has been in communication with all scooter and bicycle share companies to manage usage and parking on campus. When traveling to campus, scooters must be parked at outdoor bike racks to keep sidewalks, driveways, entrances to buildings, ADA curbs clear. When traveling off campus, riders should utilize bike lanes whenever possible and be courteous and yield right of way to pedestrians when riding on pedestrians paths or sidewalks.

Using Rideshare (Uber, Lyft, Via)

Out of concern for AU community members’ safety and traffic congestion on major roads near campus, AU asks that students, faculty, and staff request pick-up and drop-offs from rideshare companies within campus. Please be considerate to our neighbors and use the following designated and signed locations:

Letts-McKinley Roadway
Hughes Hall Shuttle Cutout
Nebraska Hall

Campus Parking Update

New Pay Stations have been installed in the Katzen Garage (P2 & P3 Levels) and East Campus Surface Lot (by Ward Circle).

Level-Two Electric Vehicle Charging Stations are now available in the Katzen, East Campus, SIS, and WCL garages.
