Located on the main campus of American University, the Career Center encompasses the 5th Floor of Butler Pavilion, two floors above the AU Bookstore. The Center is most easily accessed from the Butler Pavilion elevator, Bender Arena garage, and staircase connecting Butler Pavilion and the Mary Graydon Center. View detailed campus maps.
Parking on campus
Guests of the Career Center should park in the Bender Arena garage. Parking permits are required during business hours so you must request a complimentary permit prior to your visit and display it in your front windshield.
If you are attending AU's fall or spring Job and Internship Fair permits are also required. Instructions will be sent prior to the fair.
For Career Center events after 5:00 p.m., parking in the Bender Arena garage is free and permits are not required.
Traveling by car
From the Key Bridge (Arlington, Falls Church, Fairfax) follow 66 East or Route 50 East to the Key Bridge. Once across the bridge, turn left onto M Street, which quickly becomes Canal Road NW. Get into the right lane and continue up the hill onto Foxhall Road. When Foxhall ends (2.5 miles), turn right onto Nebraska Avenue. At the first traffic light, turn left and then an immediate right through the Fletcher Gate entrance of American University. Follow the main campus road around the first parking garage and residence halls. Once forced to turn left, spot the Bender Arena parking garage directly ahead and proceed to level 5.
From northeast of Washington (Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York) follow I-95 south to I-495 (Capital Beltway) west toward Silver Spring.
From northwest of Washington (western Pennsylvania, western Maryland) follow I-270 south. Where I-270 divides, head right toward Northern Virginia (not toward Washington). Then merge onto 1-495 (Capital Beltway).
From Tysons Corner or McLean, take I-495 (Capital Beltway) east to Maryland.
From I-495 (Capital Beltway), take exit 39 and carefully follow signs for River Road (Maryland Route 190) toward Washington. Continue east on River Road to the fifth traffic light. Turn right onto Goldsboro Road (Maryland Route 614). At the first traffic light, turn left onto Massachusetts Avenue (Maryland Route 396). Continue on Massachusetts Avenue for approximately two miles, through the first traffic circle (Westmoreland Circle). Continue one mile further on Massachusetts and turn right at the fourth traffic light through the Glover Gate entrance of American University. As you proceed onto campus, travel about 100 yards and enter a "tunnel" under the Butler-Bender complex where campus stores are located. Once you pass through the tunnel, turn sharply to your right, enter the Bender Arena parking garage, and proceed to level 5.
Traveling by train and bus
The Washington Metro system serves American University through its Tenleytown/AU station on the Red Line. Plan your metro trip with the Washington Metro Trip Planner.
AU operates a shuttle bus to and from the Tenleytown metro station every 15 minutes. From the train's platform, take the escalators up and turn left toward a third set of escalators. At the top, continue straight ahead to the curb and wait for the AU shuttle bus. Get off the bus at the Ward Circle stop on the main campus and ask the driver to alert you if you are uncertain. Then refer to the campus map for directions to the Butler Pavilion or another destination.
