Comparative Experiences in Cases of Sexual and Gender Violence in the Latam Region: From the Integration of the Gender Approach to the Implementation

May 11 Panel from 2022

On May 11, 2022, the Panel on Comparative Experiences in Cases of Sexual and Gender Violence in the Latam Region: From the Integration of the Gender Approach to Implementation” was held, organized by American University and ReLeG. During the event we explored the comparative experiences of reparations in cases of sexual and gender-based violence in the region. In particular, the advances that women victims have achieved as a result of their tireless struggle were discussed, as well as the challenges that they continue to face in order to obtain comprehensive reparations that recognize the individual and collective effects of this violence. Activists and academics participated in the panel and discussed the reparations processes in Argentina and Chile after the dictatorships, as well as the pending lawsuits in Peru, particularly in the case of forced sterilizations that are still in process. Finally, a final reflection was made on the state of the debate in the region, taking into account other comparative experiences in Latin America.
