Inter-American Human Rights Competition
Elizabeth Abi Mershed
The Competition is a unique trilingual competition (English, Spanish and Portuguese) developed to prepare and train law students on how to use the Inter-American Human Rights System (SIDH) as a legitimate instance to repair human rights violations at the inter-American level. The theme of the competition will be “Equality and Human Rights: Confronting Racial Discrimination”.
This year, the KAS State of Law Program for Latin America will assume the registration costs of four Latin American teams of 3 people each (2 speakers and 1 coach), to participate in the Competition that will take place from 22 to May 26, 2023 in Washington D.C. Registration costs do not include visa, accommodation, air transportation or per diem expenses.
Conditions
The school/team must not have resources to finance the registration fee for the competition.
Ideally, the school/team is applying for the first time in the Competition.
The school/team should preferably be located in a country underrepresented in the Competition.
The team members (2 speakers and 1 coach) must have real possibilities to travel to the United States of America*. This requirement does not prevent that later, at the cost of the team, they decide to incorporate one more member as a coach or observer.
Deadlines
Scholarship applications will be received until February 15, 2023 at iusla@kas.de with a copy to miguel.barboza@kas.de with the subject: Inter-American Human Rights Competition 2023.
All files must come in a single PDF.
Requirements
Preference will be given to teams that meet all the above conditions**.
Submit a collective resume of school/team members (not separate documents)
Motivation letter of one page per team demonstrating interest and the importance of participating in the Competition (no separate documents)
Letter from the University supporting the participation and certifying the letter of resources***.
* The KAS understands by "real possibilities" having a US visa or that according to the Embassy of the United States of America in their country there are real possibilities of appointments to grant them a US visa prior to the competition. This last requirement must be ascertained by each participating team. American University and KAS will provide support to the teams selected for these procedures.
**The KAS may request additional documentation to verify the requirements, as well as declare the call void in case no teams are found with the stipulated criteria.
*** The Charter of the University can be issued by the Dean of the Faculty of Law/Jurisprudence or, failing that, the Director of the Course.
We look forward to your application!
