The project had an integrated strategy for study and scholarship for project participants at American University, as well as substantive programming planned at the University of Peshawar and collaboration and ongoing involvement by faculty at both UP and AU, to promote the goals of creating an accepting environment for the teaching of human rights and gender at UP and, ultimately, creating lasting change in human rights and gender attitudes and awareness at UP and beyond.
A core component of the project included a faculty exchange that enabled members of the UP permanent faculty to study at American University (AU) to obtain their PhD degrees and to engage in specialized training in the mainstreaming and integration of human rights and gender into their respective disciplines, including through participation in AUWCL’s prestigious International Visiting Scholars Program. In addition, the project supported a program of Junior Scholar Teaching Fellowships at UP to expand the pool of qualified junior teachers of human rights and gender, as well as to fill the teaching positions of the faculty members studying at AU. Project participants engaged in specialized training programs focused on the teaching of human rights and gender in which they explored strategies for teaching sensitive topics and ways to expand opportunities for learning, study and scholarship on human rights and gender in the complicated cultural and political context of Peshawar, which is located in the conservative and volatile Khyber Pakhtunkhwa region of Pakistan.
