Next Steps in Supporting the School of Education

Over the past month, I have had the privilege of speaking with students, faculty, staff, and alumni about the future of the School of Education (SOE). These conversations have been deeply personal and, at times, challenging, but they have also offered valuable insights and constructive ideas to guide our work.

Let me state clearly: we are fully committed to the School of Education. Our focus has always been on ensuring SOE provides the highest-quality education for students, robust support for faculty research and teaching, and a strong, vibrant community. At the same time, as budget conversations are taking place in all schools, we must address our financial realities and develop administrative structures that position SOE for long-term success while preserving its mission. Looking at creative solutions for the future across the university is critical for all of us.

To move forward, I am pleased to share two important updates:

  1. Rodney Hopson will serve as interim dean of SOE beginning January 6, 2025.Following a collaborative process with SOE faculty and staff, we are delighted to announce that Rodney Hopson will step into the role of interim dean. Dr. Hopson is a distinguished scholar with expertise in program evaluation. Since joining AU in 2023, he has served as Acting Co-Dean and Professor (2023–2024) and currently as Senior Associate Dean and Professor in SOE, demonstrating his strong leadership and deep commitment to the school. Dr. Hopson’s experience and dedication make him exceptionally well-positioned to guide SOE during this transitional period. He will serve through the 2025–2026 academic year while we conduct a comprehensive search for the school’s next leader. As we announce this new appointment, we also recognize the legacy of Dean Cheryl Holcomb-McCoy and her years of outstanding service to American University.
  2. An SOE task force has been formed to shape the future of the school. This newly formed task force co-chaired by faculty, staff, and student leaders is exploring innovative ways to sustain and enhance SOE’s academic excellence and will focus on aligning the school’s resources with its goals to ensure long-term success. This important work to chart a path forward has already begun, with the group holding its first two meetings this week. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the members for their expertise, commitment, and willingness to contribute their time and talent.

Looking ahead, we have important work to do to ensure SOE thrives and provides opportunities for SOE students to succeed at AU and in their careers. By aligning resources with student, academic, and operational needs, we can support our mission and seize strategic opportunities.

I am deeply grateful for the passion and dedication of the SOE community as we take these next steps together.
