New Certificate Bridges Gap Between Social Science and Policy

New Certificate Prepares American University Students for Real-World Impact

Want to turn your social science studies into real-world impact?

The College of Arts and Sciences is launching a Social Science and Policy Undergraduate Certificate, designed to equip students with the skills, experience, and connections to influence evidence-based policymaking.

For decades, researchers have noted that public policy is often shaped more by ideology, interest groups, and popular opinion than by actual research. This certificate program aims to change that by training students to translate social science insights into meaningful policy solutions.

Economics Professor and Department Chair Kara Reynolds emphasizes the importance of the skills that students will gain through this certificate, especially during the rapid policy changes of the current presidential administration. “It is essential that researchers learn to effectively communicate with policy makers about the dramatic consequences that changes in government policies will have on members of society. This certificate will help AU students turn research into action.”

Why This Certificate?

Students in the program will gain a deep understanding of how policy is made, learn to communicate research to policymakers and the public, and develop hands-on experience at the intersection of social science and government. Through coursework, mentorship, and networking, they will:

  • Learn how public policies are developed and influenced
  • Conduct research on timely and real-world policy challenges
  • Translate complex research into accessible formats, such as op-eds and briefing papers
  • Engage with policymakers and public leaders
  • Develop critical thinking, adaptability, and communication skills.

What to Expect

The program features a mix of academic coursework, research, and real-world engagement. Students will take Political Power and American Public Policy and discipline-specific writing courses, along with a new Social Science Research and Policy Seminar, where guest speakers from think tanks, government agencies, and NGOs will share insights into the policymaking process. Students will also complete an independent research project, producing both a traditional academic paper and a policy-focused briefing document or op-ed.

Beyond coursework, the certificate will foster a tight-knit community of students, faculty mentors, and policy professionals. A kick-off reception will introduce students to key figures in policy, while guest lectures and networking events will provide ongoing opportunities to connect with experts in government, academia, and the nonprofit sector.

Who Should Apply?

This certificate is ideal for students focusing on the social sciences who want to apply their research skills to policymaking. Admission is open to all students in at least their second year who are majoring or minoring in any of the programs offered by Anthropology, Economics, Health Studies, Sociology, and Psychology.

If you’re passionate about making a difference through research-driven policy, this program offers the tools, knowledge, and connections to do just that.

Stay tuned for application details and deadlines. If you have any questions, please email Kara Reynolds, economics professor and department chair, at socialsciencepolicy@american.edu
